Human brain tissue contained several times more microplastic than liver or kidney, and brains of people diagnosed with dementia showed markedly greater accumulation, concentrated in cerebrovascular walls and immune cells.
A Nature Medicine study analyzing postmortem human tissue found micro- and nanoplastics accumulating in the brain at far higher concentrations than in the liver or kidney, with levels appearing to rise over recent years. Brains of decedents with a documented dementia diagnosis carried the highest microplastic burden.
